The short answer
Proper microneedling aftercare means keeping skin clean and moisturized, avoiding direct sun exposure for 72 hours, and skipping retinoids and exfoliating acids for about a week while it heals. Mild redness similar to a light sunburn is normal for 24–48 hours, and most people can wear makeup again the next day. Collagen remodeling continues for weeks afterward.
The First 24–48 Hours After Microneedling
Right after your session, your skin will likely look flushed and feel warm to the touch — most clients compare it to a light sunburn. This reaction is expected: the SkinPen® Precision Elite device creates thousands of controlled micro-channels that trigger your skin's natural healing and collagen-building response. A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, so most people tolerate the 30–45 minute session comfortably, and any residual sensitivity typically fades within the first day or two.
During the first 24–48 hours:
- Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
- Skip makeup, active skincare, and heavy products
- Stay out of direct sunlight, tanning beds, saunas, and very hot showers
- Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, and swimming
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase to reduce irritation
Your Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline
Downtime after microneedling with SkinPen® Precision Elite is minimal compared to more invasive treatments, but your skin still needs a few days to settle.
- Day 1: Redness and warmth similar to a sunburn; skin may feel tight or slightly swollen.
- Day 2–3: Redness fades noticeably; skin may feel dry or slightly rough as micro-exfoliation begins.
- Day 4–5: Most visible redness has resolved; your normal skincare routine can typically resume.
- Weeks 2–6: Collagen remodeling continues beneath the surface — this is when improvements in texture, tone, and firmness become more visible.
Because results build gradually, most clients complete a series of 3 microneedling sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments once or twice a year to sustain results.
Skincare Ingredients to Avoid While Healing
Freshly treated skin is more permeable and sensitive, so certain active ingredients can cause stinging, irritation, or breakouts if reintroduced too soon.
For at least 5–7 days after treatment, avoid:
- Retinol and retinoids
- Vitamin C and other potent antioxidant serums
- AHAs and BHAs (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acids)
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Fragranced lotions, toners, or essential-oil-based products
- Physical exfoliants, scrubs, or exfoliating tools
What to Use Instead
While your skin recovers, simplify your routine to support healing rather than fight it.
- Cleanse with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser using lukewarm water
- Apply a bland, hydrating moisturizer to support the skin barrier
- Use a hyaluronic-acid-based serum if recommended by your provider
- Reintroduce broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen once cleared to do so
- Keep skin consistently hydrated to support ongoing collagen remodeling
Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable
Sun exposure is one of the biggest threats to both your comfort and your results. Clinic guidance is to avoid sun exposure 24 hours before treatment and 72 hours afterward, since newly treated skin is significantly more vulnerable to UV damage, sensitivity, and pigmentation changes. Once that 72-hour window has passed, daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher should become a permanent habit, along with a hat or shade during extended time outdoors.
When You Can Resume Makeup and Exercise
Most clients can comfortably wear makeup again the day after treatment, once any pinpoint redness has settled — using clean brushes or sponges helps avoid introducing bacteria into the skin. For exercise, plan to avoid intense workouts, heavy sweating, and swimming for about 24–48 hours, since sweat and friction can aggravate freshly treated skin. Light walking is generally fine as soon as you feel comfortable.
Boosting Your Results with PRP or Exosomes
Many clients choose to enhance their microneedling results with an add-on treatment. Microneedling with PRP, starting at $199, incorporates your own platelet-rich plasma into the micro-channels created during treatment, which may support enhanced results and a smoother recovery. The exosomes & PDRN add-on, starting at $49, is designed for advanced skin regeneration and pairs well with a standard session. Afsaneh, NP, can help you decide which add-on best fits your skin goals during your visit.
Warning Signs That Warrant Contacting the Clinic
Most aftercare symptoms are mild and short-lived, but certain signs mean you should reach out promptly. Contact Luxe By Afsaneh Medical Aesthetics if you experience:
- Redness or swelling that worsens after 48–72 hours instead of improving
- Increasing pain, warmth, or tenderness at the treatment site
- Pus, oozing, or other signs of possible infection
- Fever or feeling generally unwell
- A rash or reaction spreading beyond the treated area
When in doubt, it's always better to call and ask than to wait it out.
